Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool Seems Dead

A DigitalPoint Forums member reports that the Yahoo! Overture Keyword Tool is no longer providing results.

I reproduced this as illustrated below.

Goodbye, Overture

It looks like the Overture tool is finally gone unless this is a bug. YahooSarah said in January that Overture would be offline until an updated product was released. Does this mean the product is ready? After all, in May, Yahoo stopped updating the Overture tool. It has been four months so hopefully a new tool will be announced shortly.

Since so many tools use the Overture API, I certainly hope that this is the case. DigitalPoint Forums members agree.

Yahoo! Maps introduces "Send to Car"

If you happen to be the proud owner of a shiny new Mercedes-Benz with Tele Aid, then you should be pleased to hear about our new Send to Car feature, which allows addresses and businesses found on Yahoo! Maps to be sent directly to your Mercedes-Benz vehicle through their new Search & Send program.

Starting today, a new 'Send to Car' link joins 'Send to Phone' and 'Send by Email' in the dropdown menu on Yahoo! Maps, and it's super easy to use in two ways:

1. Just enter an address or get driving directions on Yahoo! Maps as you normally would. Click the "Send to Car" link, and select which (if more than one) address or addresses you'd like to download to your vehicle. Edit the title of the address if you're so inclined and finally, enter the email address of your car and hit send
2. Or, you can send business information directly from their popup window when you use "Find a Business on the Map." Search for businesses by keyword or by name, such as "dry cleaners" or "Pizzeria Uno" and click "Send to Car" on the in-map popup and follow the same instructions above.

Once in your vehicle, simply push the i-button, and the address information will be downloaded directly to your navigation system. You will be prompted to begin routing immediately, or save the address for later use.

One of the best uses for this feature is not only to send yourself addresses to use later, but to have friends and family send you addresses while you’re on the road when you need them, so you don’t have to worry about writing down information as you drive, or pull over to enter addresses yourself.

We were pleased to work with Mercedes-Benz as the first automobile manufacturer in our new Send to Car feature, and we think this new bridge between the comfort of your own keyboard and your in-car nav system is the best of both worlds.

Yahoo!, Microsoft ink web pact with Chinese government

Microsoft and Yahoo! have signed a pact with the Chinese government that "encourages" the big name web players to record the identities of bloggers and censor content. So says Reporters Without Borders, an organization that fights for journalistic rights across the globe.

The French advocacy group reports that at least 20 blogging services, including Yahoo!.cn and MSN.cn, have agreed to the new "self-discipline pact" laid down by the Internet Society of China, a spin-off from the Information Industry Ministry. Under the pact, the services are encouraged to store the real names and contact details of Chinese bloggers and delete "illegal and bad" information from user comments.

The pact doesn't require the services to register bloggers under their real names, as was previously proposed, but Reporters Without Borders is adamant that the agreement will significantly undermine free speech. "This decision will have grave consequences for the Chinese blogosphere and marks the end of anonymous blogging," the organization said. "A new wave of censorship and repression seems imminent."

The worry is that the government will now have the power to finger Chinese bloggers and punish them for material it doesn't approve of. "The Chinese government has yet again forced Internet sector companies to cooperate on sensitive issues - in this case, blogger registration and blog content," Reporters Without Borders said. "As they already did with website hosting services, the authorities have given themselves the means to identify those posting 'subversive' content by imposing a self-discipline pact."

This is a particularly sensitive issue for Yahoo! The company is facing a US lawsuit over journalist Shi Tao, who was jailed after the company delivered information about his web doings to the Chinese government, and the case has sparked an investigation in the US Senate, following claims that Yahoo! tried to cover-up its involvement in the jailing.

When we asked Yahoo! about its new pact with the Internet Society of China, it referred us to a company called Alibaba, which "manages" Yahoo!'s China arm. We contacted Alibaba as well, but the company didn't immediately respond.

Initially, we didn't hear back from Microsoft either, but the company told The Los Angeles Times that it would not ask bloggers to reveal their identities. "The document makes some recommendations that Microsoft does not support," said Adam Sohn, director of Microsoft's online services group. "We will not implement real-name registration for blogging in our Windows Live Spaces service." Which makes you wonder why the company has agreed to sign the pact.

Does Yahoo Search hold the key to online spending?

SiCap Industries, a retailer of natural health remedies with a bustling online business, is crediting Yahoo's search engine with increasing their bottom line. That is because, according to the company, Yahoo searchers spend about 30% more than other consumers.

"We haven't figured out why, but our web stats show consumers referred by Yahoo definitely spend more money on our websites, and according to data collected from our retailers, Yahoo surfers also spend more money in the stores that carry our products," said Wayne Perry, president of SiCap Industries. Perry went on to say that this isn't a recent change; SiCap's web stats indicate that Yahoo searchers have been spending more with them for about three years.

Why do Yahoo searchers spend more? That question is probably different from consumer to consumer, but Perry has his own theory: that Google searchers are primarily kids looking for free stuff while Yahoo's search base is adults actually interested in purchasing products.

Though known as being second to Google is most search categories, this information could help Yahoo turn the corner with advertisers. If consumers who search with Yahoo are, in fact, spending more online then it would make sense for more advertisers to invest in Yahoo's search platform.

Yahoo audio search adds samples

When was the last time you suddenly remembered a favorite song and craved to hear a piece of it right away? If you're like me, it happens pretty often.

Now on Yahoo! Audio Search you can play samples of millions of songs. The new inline player provides instant playback right next to the search results. There are no intrusive pop-ups or multiple browser windows to manage -- only a 30-second, uninterrupted instant audio experience. And, there's also a 'Select Preferred Audio Service' feature that helps you link to your favorite audio provider directly from the results page.

From Cliff Richard to Norah Jones, search for your favorite songs, artists, albums, and lyrics and listen to the sample playback instantly. All you need to do is click on the 'Play Sample' button next to the track you want to hear.

For example, you can listen to back-to-back samples of Shakira's most popular songs or all the 2007 Grammy nominees' tracks right from the search results page.

Or perhaps get nostalgic by listening to John Denver's voice or sampling through tracks of ABBA's popular album Voulez-Vous.

You can access Yahoo! Audio Search from www.yahoo.com by selecting the 'Audio' option from the 'more' drop down menu.
